Camping with Turkeys on the Run

Aaron and I have always been outdoorsy people. The first summer we were married we acquired backpacks and did some backpacking in Bryce and lots of hiking around Utah while we were there. We even took Destroy backpacking when he was 8 months old for three days. We always talked about how we would go camping with our kids, but I was a bit hesitant because I don't sleep well camping as it is, and with a child kicking me in the back every 10 minutes, I wasn't so excited. But I got over my fear of one bad night sleep (you can tell I deeply value my sleep) and we went camping. Aaron somehow rigged getting two days off in a row so we headed out to Turkey Run campground west of Indy.

We went hiking as soon as we got there.

I couldn't resist. The little boys following Dad's footsteps. Ahhhh...

Have I mentioned that Destroy has a new thing for drawing. Oh yes, he draws every chance he gets. Luckily this phase hit right before he started preschool. Anyways, this was him the entire hike. You can pick out various marks from the trail on his shins due to his lack of attentiveness to hiking and more to his notebook and pen. He even adopted our camera case for his obsessions and slung it over his shoulder while he hiked.
It's it beautiful? I reminded us of the gorges in Oregon.
Love the colors. Destroy pointed out that he thought that the rocks were bleeding.

Poking the minnows by the trickle.
Search running across the suspension bridge. It was all fun and games until Daddy started jumping on it. They didn't like that.A millipede. Ew. Destroy tried putting it in his pocket, but that never works. I usually find odd critters at the bottom of the washing machine and I usually cannot determine which kind of critter it was. Feel free to vomit now.
Some cool rays of light.
Eating breakfast. It's only 8 am and we already need a bath! We took our little propane-powered camp stove and had french toast, bacon and eggs. Camping is a great excuse to eat unhealthy food. For dinner we had hot dogs followed by smores. The boys were wondering what we had done with their parents.

The next day we packed our snacks and went on a little canoe trip. The boys had fun looking at the tons of catfish but mostly eating snacks. The best shot we could get. Pretty pathetic.
They have a bunch of covered bridges out there too. There's some kind of covered bridge festival there too, but I'm not that into covered bridges, or bridges in general for the matter, so I think we'll pass. But we had fun and the kids didn't kick me in the back too many times during the night! Destroy didn't want to leave so we told him we'd do it again soon!

pretty pictures! How fun--I'm glad you got to get out and enjoy the beautiful scenery. You are so cute by the way Megan--it's kind of ridiculous to look that good camping...

How fun! I am glad you enjoyed it! We will have to take our kids out camping one of these times, or else they will never know what it is like. I guess I liked it when I was little, but not so much now, and who knows if Mike ever went camping. I don't even think he was into scouts!

By the way, great pictures!

I can tell by your pictures that your boys were in total camping heaven! My favorite is the first one where they are following dad-love it!

And is that Destroy eating yet another banana?!

What great pictures!

I'm sorry to say that our boys won't learn how fun camping is from their parents. Our idea of camping is a king sized bed at a Hilton . . .

What a beautiful area! Despite my outdoorsy background, we have yet to go camping with the kids. I just can't wrap my mind around keeping them all safe in the woods. But it looks like you have lots of fun!

That looks like so much fun! I love the pictures and I love the joy in the boys' faces. J wants us to do some camping while here. Crazy, but probably fun.

So beautiful. It looks like you had such a good time. Your boys are too cute. I can't believe you find critters at the bottom of your washing machine. I'm going to have a lot to learn about boys if we have one. Hailee likes camping, but she'd rather die than touch a bug.

Meg that looks so fun. We just took Noelle camping for the first time and ....it wasn't that great. It was below freezing, so she had to sleep in bed with us (we were in a camper) and she slept great, but I froze to death and didn't sleep at all. Don't you just love the great outdoors. I love that "Destroy" was drawing the whole time. So fun.

I don't know if many others noticed Destroy's colorful dark green socks. Just like the discounted Old Navy orange socks he had today at the Zoo! :)

I know. I came home with colorful socks (because they were on sale) and Aaron told me that little boys were supposed to wear white socks. Brooke H. would have a thing or two to say about that, huh? I'm not one for plain socks either though.

Yeah colorful socks! I have a hard time finding cute, colorful socks for Ellee and when I do--they're so expensive! I mean really! And, then her feet are so big and grow so fast, I've bought cute socks and then she never even got to wear them. Bummer! So, long live the sales and clearance rack!
